Just One Scene

Though it’s difficult to pin down any particular scene from a particular film because there are a lot of films which I truly admire; the climax of Johny Mera Naam is a scene which I can surely point out. I think it’s a gem of a climax which can be considered as a masterpiece. And it’s such a long sequence. The rule book dictums say many things when it comes to writing a scene: A scene should be of so and so duration, it shouldn’t be too long; it shouldn’t go beyond four pages and things like that. It’s kind of a general perception that a scene should be as short as it could possibly be. If it’s a climax, that one should change locations through it.

The climax of Johny Mera Naam is about 20-22 minutes long. It breaks many norms of scriptwriting and creates some sparkling moments. Here is a small build up to it:

Monu (Mohan) and Sonu (Sohan) are the two brothers. Their father, a police inspector, gets murdered. Subsequently, one brother, Sohan (Dev Anand), grows up to become an undercover policeman, while the other, Mohan (Pran), becomes a criminal unknowingly working for the very manRanjit (Prem Nath) who ordered the murder of his father.

Sohan is disguised as a small-time thief named Johny when he befriends a notorious smuggler, Heeralal (Jeevan) in jail who confides in him and asks him to meet Rekha (Hema Malini). Johny meets Rekha and infiltrates the gang headed by Mohan (now called Moti). Johny comes to know that Rekha's dad, Rai Saheb Bhupinder Singh, is in Ranjit’s custody. Meanwhile, Heera finds out about Johny’s real identity and reports this to Moti once he has got out of the jail.

What follows, is an engrossing tale of lost & found, twists & turns and double-crosses.The great ‘finding-the-lost-brother’ scene sets the tone for the climatic action, where Vijay Anand keeps the action and drama going till the very last moment.

The climax starts with Ranjit putting up an auction. Meanwhile a plan is set by Johny and the police commissioner in which Moti is also involved. So Moti goes and lures Heera into meeting Ranjit (the fake Rai saheb). Johny and the Police Commissioner Mehta wait outside Ranjit’s den for things to go according to their plan. They can’t take any action before they don’t get Johny’s mother out of Heera’s captivity. Moti and Heera reach Ranjit’s place. Moti sneaks in a microphone in Heera’s coat which is being heard at commissioner Mehta’s recorder. When Heera finally gets to meet Ranjit, he discloses that Johny and Moti are traitors. The story twirls around many times leaving Ranjit completely boggled not knowing whom to believe.

The whole sequence is superbly written where the three I.S. Johars (Pehala Ram, Dooja Ram, Teeja Ram- a triple role) also come in handy. All the performances by all the actors are topnotch. Another thing which I like about it is that it’s shot very simply. It has nice visuals but there is no attempt at creating any visual jugglery. It’s the genius of Goldie saaheb that he was able to capture the pure drama of this sequence. It requires a lot of confidence to play it with simplicity because most of the times the filmmaker goes overboard while shootingthe climax. It’s because he gets apprehensive about it and feelsthat it’s a special moment of the film and therefore an epitome is to be reached.As a result one gets carried away and tries too much manipulation. On the other hand, in the climax of Johny Mera Naam, you will find that Goldie saaheb has kept the inherent drama of the scene intact.

The last scene before you get into the climax shows Heera, who has abducted Johny’s mother and who also knows that Moti and Johny (Mohan and Sohan) have come together, calling Commissioner Mehta. Just then, the two brothers come and meet the commissioner and after a brief reconciliation Mehta tells them that he has a plan. Here is what follows:

INT. RANJIT’S DEN – NIGHT
The auction takes place. There are many foreign-buyers who have gathered. Ranjit comes with Bhupinder who is on a wheelchair.

RANJIT
(To Bhupinder) Jo Sikhaya Gaya Hai Us Se Ek Lafz Bhi Idhar Udhar Kaha Bhupinder Toh Ek Second Mein Tumhari Beti Ka Sar Dhad Se Alag Kar Diya Jaayega. Samajh Gaye?

RANJIT
(Claps) Attention Ladies, Gentlemen. Meet The Fabulous Owner Of Fabulous Collection Of Jewels, My Master Rai Saheb Bhupinder Singh Obe. Rai Saheb, Ijazat Ho Toh Neelaami Shuru Karu?

RANJIT

Johny and Commissioner Mehta wait with a playback device and a rope.

Apne Dono Bhaaiyon Ko Lene Gaya Hai.

COMMISSIONER MEHTA
Hmm, Kaam Aayenge.

JOHNY

(NOTE: Vijay Anand doesn’t waste anytime here. He doesn’t show us the auction which we have seen in numerous films. Instead he warps it up by one dialogue of Dev Anand and the time- lapse is so smooth that we don’t raise questions like – how did the auction go? Did everyting get sold out? The information is, in fact, provided in the next scene.)

EXT. RANJIT’S DEN – NIGHT

The auction has got over and the buyers have left the premise.

RANJIT
(Laughs) Rai Saheb, Rai Saheb.. Aapka Bahut Bahut Shukria Rai Saheb. Khaadim Ne Aaj Aapke Naam Par Do Karod Rupaye Kama Liye, Do Karod! Aey Hey Koi Hai? Come Here! Rai Saheb Ko 5-7 Din Ke Liye Rajmahal Mein Le Jao.

CUT TO:
EXT. OUTSIDE RANJIT’S DEN.ROAD – NIGHT

A herd of cars takes off from the auction venue. Johny and Police Commissioner see them coming and Johny blows a whistle. After a few minutes police intercepts the cars and gets hold of the smugglers.

(NOTE: Again, no time wasted. The editor cuts the scene as soon as the cars are stopped and the police troupes come out of the bushes. For someone who wants to practice ‘economy of screenplay, this is a fine example.)

INT. A BAR - NIGHT

Heeara sits at a bar drinking where Moti comes.

HEERA
Kya Hua Moti?

MOTI
Tum Rai Saheb Se Milna Chahte Thhe Na Heera? Chalo, Lekin Ek Shart Hai. (NOTE: This is the first part of Commissioner Mehta’s plan. Moti is fooling around with Heera when he puts up his condition. And speaking again of the economy? The whole scene is done in one shot without a single cut.)

Moti reaches at Ranjit’s palace with Heera. He orders one of the men.

MOTI
Gaffur, Rai Saheb Se Keh Do Ki Moti Aaya Hai... (To Heera) Dekho Heera, Maine Apna Waayada Poora Kar Diya Ab Tum Apne Waayade Ka Khayaal Rakhna.

(NOTE: Moti again entices Heera and reminds him of not doing what he actually wants him to end up doing.)

Ghabrao Nahin, Aaj Tak Aisa Hua Hai Ki Heera Ne Apna Waada Na Nibhaya Ho?
As Heera says this, Moti sneaks in a microphone in his coat’s pocket.

Johny and the Police Commissioner listen to what Heera had been saying on the playback devise.

(To Johny) Toh Agar Yeh Heera Dagabaaz Na Nikla Toh Hamara Saara Plan Fail Ho Jaayega. Yeh Ranjit Singh Ko Zaroor Batayega Ki Isne Tumhari Maa Ko Isne Kahaan Chhupa Ke Rakha Hai
(NOTE: Here is what Commissioner Mehta had in mind. This was his plan. They are waiting for Heera to spill the beans.)

Heera sees a couple of gun-mans around and gets scared.

Ranjit gets down from the stairs.

RANJIT

(NOTE: Suberb reaction by Pran. In fact, the whole sequence banks heavily on the dialogue delivery of every actor which is purely superlative.)

Hera takes Ranjit aside and whispers.
(NOTE: Moti deliberately lets Heera to do what he wants to.)

Aap Aasteen Mein Saanp Paal Rahe Hain Rai Saheb. Moti Dagabaaz Hai. Police Ko Is Adde Ki Khabar Ho Chuki Hai. Agar Main Na Hota Toh Is Waqt Tak Yahaan Ghera Pad Chukka Hota
(NOTE: Heera betrays his promise to Moti. He has changed sides.)

(NOTE: Heera saw the two brothers in a very long shot. The screenplay maintains this accuracy as Heera still deson’t know that Moti and Johny are brothers.)

Bambai Ka Commissionor Bhi Isi Silsile Mein Kathmandu Aaya Hau Hai. Johny Uske Paas Baitha Hua Apni Kismet Ko Ro Raha Hoga. Kyunki Meri Ijazat Ke Bagair Woh Ek Kadam Bhi Nahi Utha Sakta, Uski Maan, Mere Kabze Mein Hai.
(NOTE: Here is where Heera fumbles. He doesn’t have an idea that Johny might be a step ahead of him.)

(NOTE: If Heera would have told Ranjit the whereabouts of Johny’s mother, Commissioner Mehta’s plan would have worked. But Vijay Anand doesn’t want to make it easy for his characters. Now they will have to improvise upon the situation. )

Johny and the Police Commissioner are getting all the action on their recorder.

Johny enters with Pehala Ram and commissioner Mehta whose hands have been tied with a rope. The commissioner also holds a playback device. 

(NOTE: TWIST! Johny has dared to enter Ranjit’s den! The audience doesn’t know what he is upto. By now, we have given up predicting the future events. We are completely engrossed in the scene. )

(NOTE: Dev Anand is the key to the whole sequence. The way he plays the whole scene gives him an upper hand over Ranjit. He is oozing with confidence, super excited and his loudness works as it makes Ranjit listen to everything which he says. A man who is as vocal as Johny is either the most honest person on earth or is the master conman. Isn’t it? Just note how Dev Anand carries the scene forward.)

RANJIT

RANJIT

Ae, Talashi Expert Hum Hain. Oh, Sorry. Aaaah! Pakda Gaya!... Yeh Kya Hai? Oh, Frenchie Microphone? (Shows it to Ranjit) Frenchie Microphone!
(NOTE: The director hasn’t forgotten I.S. Johar and gets him into action at the right time. It keeps a balance of the scene going. Vijay Anand handles all the characters and keeps giving them something to do.)
Johny takes the microphone and inquires the commissioner.

Pehala Ram takes the microphone and goes away. Ranjit listens to the playback device.

A couple of men gets Johny’s mother out of the van.

Johny’s mother is taken inside. Heera jumps in.

(NOTE: Dev Anand and Sulochana exchange a look. She gets everything by the expression on his son’s face.)

RANJIT
(Intervenes) Kya? Apne Bete Ko Nahin Pehchanti Tum?

MOTHER
Pehchanti Hoon Na, Abhi Pehchanti Hoon.. Mujhe Thoda Bakhat Deejiye.. Aap Mere Saath Rahiyega.

RANJIT

MOTHER

Two men take away the commissioner, Bhupinder Singh and Rekha. Pehala Ram is with them who jumps in fright when he sees something. It’s his gtwo brothers dressed as ghosts. One is in black and the other is in white. Ranjit’s men are scared.

(Pretending to be scared) Kaun Hai? Kaun Hai? Kaun Hai?

DOOJA RAM
Mujhe Nahin Pehchante? Main Tumhara Bhoot Hoo

Ranjit’s men run away. Commissioner Mehta tries to break free from the ropes.

INT. RANJIT’S DEN – NIGHT
Heera goes hard at Moti and Jhony with a hunter. The stand at their position and continue to endure the pain. Their bodies have started to show heavy wounds. Their mother also stands at her position crying in helplessness.

MOTHER
(Pleading) Bhagwan Ke Liye Bas Karo... Bas Karo Bas Karo... Bhagwan Ke Liye Bas Karo...
This goes for a while before the two brothers suddenly turn the table and the obligatory climatic fight suequence begins. They get their enemies trapped in a loop of rope and both pull hard from either side trying not to let them go.

SOHAN!!!

JOHNY
Chhodna Nahin Mohan Chhodna Nahin

MOTI
Ab Kaun Chhodega Sohan!
The enemies escape and the fist fight begins again. Ranjit gets hold of Moti and sits over his chest trying to choke him. Johny grabes Ranjit’s neck from behind.

RANJIT
(In anger) Moti Ke Bachhe Tujhe Paal Pos Kar Is Kaabil Banaya?

JOHNY
(Trying hard to get ranjit down) Kis Qaabil Banaya? Kisi Qaabil Nahin Banayaa...

RANJIT (CONTD.)
..Nahin Toh Anaanoth Kee Tarah Palata

CUT TO:
JOHNY

Lekin Ise Anaath Banaya Kisne?
Ranjit gets over Johny as well. He holds both the brothers by their necks sitting over them.

RANJIT
Ab Pata Chala Kisne?
The brothers push away Ranjit and then get him cornered between them. They practice some boxing over him.

JOHNY
(Punches Ranjit) Yeh Aaya Left

MOTI
(Punches Ranjit) Yeh Aaya Right…

CUT TO:
(NOTE:The moment Ranjit gets his final punch; we cut to him being thrown in jail. This ends the drawn out climax and Vijay Anand wraps up the resolution in less than one and a half minutes. He doesn’t waste any time while showing the two brothers standing infront of their father’s photograph along with commissioner Mehta, then their reunioun with their mother and finally Johny and Rekha getting married.)
