A Review – By RAJNNI
Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight purser on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73 flying from Mumbai to USA, which was hijacked by four armed men on 5th Sept 1986 at Karachi airport in Pakistan. The aircraft was carrying 400 passengers. The hijackers intended to crash the jumbo jet into a target in Israel, trying to do a 9/11 some 15 years ago.
Neerja, the senior flight purser who single-handedly saved the lives of all those aboard the PAN AM jet hijacked by 4 terrorists. This was in 1986 and she was only 23…,
Neerja, the movie is about this young hero who put the lives of others before hers, whose sense of duty was as epic as her act of bravery.
A reflective documentary shot Bollywood style, portraying the events that unfolded in those 17 hours in a very authentic and believable manner.
The plane (built specifically for this movie), the suburbia flat, the characterisation, the subtle nuances of troubled married life…all handled with lot of sensitivity and maturity.
Full kudos goes to the maker team of Atul Kasbekar and Ram Madhwani.
Atul, the Producer for backing such a strong and inspirational subject and the Director Ram for treating the story with all its vulnerabilities and engaging the audience every step of the way. Between them they have gone that extra mile in researching every detail unearthing snippets of information right to her childhood, her parents and her friends.
The casting is brilliant. Sonam Kapoor lives and breathes Neerja in every frame and her eyes emote fear, pain, joy and despair all in space of seconds. The Director truly knows how to reach into the depths of the mind from the confines of the plane.
The Music permeates through the tender relationship between Neerja and her mother (superbly played by Shabana Azmi) with the lyrics, Jeete hain chal tugging at your heart.
This story should have been told a long time ago, so a golden star to the Producer to take on a subject that required objectivity, subjectivity and a lot of ‘handling with care’….The cast and crew have given their best and we can only watch and applaud.
It’s a must watch for a variety of reasons, the most important being…Because it is Neerja !!
